What is PR NOT? Let's debunk some myths.

There’s plenty of information out there on what PR is, but what is it not? Let’s debunk some classic PR myths:

🚫 It’s all parties and champagne - Don’t be fooled by Eddie and Patsy! Doing PR for your small biz does not mean suddenly having to party and network and schmooze your way to visibility. You can do it all from your sofa!

🚫 All PR is good PR. A bad bout of PR can seriously damage your brand’s reputation and credibility, especially if your reaction is also mishandled. Don’t be fooled into thinking any PR activity will benefit your business.

🚫 I only need PR in a crisis. If your business suffers a crisis, all the good PR work that’s come before can be your saviour. Often how the brand reacts and handles the crisis can be its saving grace.

🚫 PR is an expensive luxury. There’s no longer any need to hire an expensive PR agency, who are juggling lots of different accounts. Aside from smaller, affordable agencies, freelancers and in-house options, YOU are the best champion of your business and you can DIY! And guess what the best part is, PR IS FREE.

🚫 PR = SALES! A good PR campaign should up your brand’s credibility and visibility, but it won’t necessarily convert directly to sales. PR is the dialogue between you and your customer, it does a lot of persuading, but don’t expect it to turn miracles overnight. Get in it for the long game.

🚫 PR ‘just happens’. It can just happen.. but the best PR campaigns are executed intentionally and with purpose. It doesn’t need to take up all your time, but factoring PR into your daily or weekly business routine will make a difference.

🚫 PR is the same as advertising. PR is free, earned and credible. It’s more trustworthy than advertising, because consumers know you’ve paid for it. PR is ‘go and buy these trainers, they are the best’. Advertising is ‘buy our trainers, we are the best.’
