A 5 step guide to in-person media opportunities

In-person media opportunities can seem really overwhelming, particularly for introverts. Thereโ€™s a lot of pressure to come across cool and radiate your brand messages and personality, but this can be difficult when filmed or recorded live.

Here are some tips to instil you with some of that quiet confidence:

  1. Write key messages for the occasion. What is it important to get-across during the interview? What are the key phrases and details you need to communicate? This could be your brand mission or logistics such as dates and times. Commit them to memory so you can rely on them throughout your media opp.

  2. Use stats or data to back up your key messages - if relevant. They will back up your message and adds to your argument / solidifies your message.

  3. Speak clearly and slowly. Itโ€™s easy to rush through getting your message out and wanting to wrap up the interview as quickly as you can, but itโ€™s so important to communicate your messages clearly. Itโ€™s also great practice for any future public speaking opps.

  4. Take deep breaths. Start this before you go on, and continue during the media opp. It will keep your heart from racing thanks to all the adrenaline pumping round your body. In through the nose, and out slowly through the mouth.

  5. If you get stuck or the interviewer asks you something youโ€™re uncomfortable answering, pivot back to your key messages. โ€œHereโ€™s what weโ€™re doing right now, and this is how weโ€™re doing itโ€.
